June, 2011 - I took this photo in Nice, France, inside the cemetery where Henri Matisse and Raoul Dufy are buried. These pigeons, caught in the act, were perched on the fence surrounding the cemetery. Upon returning home, I heard a story about messenger pigeons on the radio. Turns out they mate for life and, in fact, one theory as to how pigeons are always able to find their way back ‘home’ - and hence why they became messenger pigeons in the first place - is perhaps that it is just a sense of knowing where their mate is, and always knowing how to find their way back to them.
